Dry or raw denim, as opposed to washed denim, is a denim fabric that is not washed after being dyed during its production. Most denim is washed after being crafted into an article of clothing in order to make it softer and to eliminate any shrinkage which could cause an item to not fit after the owner washes it. In addition to being washed, non-dry denim is sometimes artificially “distressed” to achieve a worn-in look. Much of the appeal of dry denim lies in the fact that with time the fabric will fade in a manner similar to factory distressed denim. With dry denim, however, such fading is affected by the body of the person who wears the jeans and the activities of their daily life. This creates what many enthusiasts feel to be a more natural, unique look than pre-distressed denim. To facilitate the natural distressing process, some wearers of dry denim will often abstain from washing their jeans for more than six months,

It is commonly presented in the unwashed or raw state. Typically, the selvage edges will be located along the outseam of the pants, making it visible when cuffs are worn. Although selvage denim is not completely synonymous with unwashed denim, the presence of selvage typically implies that the denim used is a higher quality. The word “selvage” comes from the phrase “self-edge” and denotes denim made on old-style shuttle looms. These looms weave fabric with one continuous cross thread (the weft) that is passed back and forth all the way down the length of the bolt. As the weft loops back into the edge of the denim it creates this “self-edge” or Selvage. Selvage is desirable because the edge can’t fray like lower grade denims that have separate wefts which leave an open edge that must be stitched. Shuttle looming is a more time-consuming weaving process that produces denim of a tighter weave resulting in a heavier weight fabric that lasts. Shuttle looms weave a more narrow piece of fabric, and thus a longer piece of fabric is required to make a pair of jeans (approximately 3 yards). To maximize yield, traditional jean makers use the fabric all the way to the selvage edge. When the cuff is turned up the two selvage edges, where the denim is sewn together, can be seen. The selvage edge is usually stiched with colored thread: green, white, brown, yellow, and red (red is the most common). Fabric mills used these colors to differentiate between fabrics. Most selvage jeans today are dyed with synthetic indigo, but natural indigo dye is available in smaller niche denim labels. Loop dying machines feed a rope of cotton yarn through vats of indigo dye and then back out. The dye is allowed to oxidize before the next dip. Multiple dips create a deep dark indigo blue. In response to increased demand for jeans in the 1950′s, American denim manufacturers replaced the old shuttle style looms with modern projectile looms. The new looms produced fabric faster and wider (60-inches or wider), yet lighter and less durable. Synthetic dyeing techniques along with post-dye treatments were introduced to control shrink and twist. Raw selvage is material that has not been washed once undergoing the dying process. It is especially desirable because the material will fade in the creases and folds of the jeans. This process is known as whiskering. There are some of the newer types of denim on the market:

Today, some denims no longer have indigo, but other colors with the white opposing threads, producing denims in a rainbow of shades.

“Red jeans and pink jeans were our top searched terms on the site for the last two weeks,” said Sarah Curren, CEO of mywardrobe.com. Rival online retailer asos.com reports a 300% uplift on sales of coloured jeans across the board with pink jeans selling the fastest.

It’s a look that celebrities have been quick to pick up on. From Sienna Miller at the stage door to Alexa Chung at a recent GQ party to Sarah Jessica Parker in Manhattan, eye-wateringly bright denim is becoming as de rigeur as oversized sunglasses.

The most popular celebrity choice is a style named Colour Pop 811 made by J Brand which sells for £205. Yesterday the company’s CEO, Jeff Rudes, said he had sold around 36,000 pairs so far and the number was rising fast: “We planned on it being great but the results are way beyond our expectations.”

It seems that men are not immune either – albeit to a slightly more subdued colour palette. Topman reports that one particular pair of mustard chinos is the biggest selling trouser the brand has ever had.

Sales figures indicate that this isn’t some celebrity fad that will live and die on the pages of weekly magazines. “Our core customer is a 37-year-old professional woman,” said Curren. “We are not talking about young hipsters here. It’s grown-up women who are wanting this trend.”

Fiona Collins, director of communications at Tommy Hilfiger where business is brisk on brightly coloured chinos, agrees. “It’s a different demographic who are wearing the look this time around. It’s thirty and fortysomethings drawn to a more polished but preppy style.”

The headline trend from the catwalks for spring was termed colour-blocking – a look that involves mixing bold one-colour separates together – and most fashion commentators believe that the coloured-trousers explosion is evidence of customers appropriating the catwalk diktats.

“At our buying meeting we worked out that it was real women buying into the colour-blocking trend in a way they know how, because everyone wears jeans,” said Curren. Spring optimism is playing its part too. “People are simply drawn to colour in the sunshine,” said Collins.

At Topman, where the mustard phenomenon is quickly mutating into yellow and bright purple, the trend represents a reversal of where men have worn colour in recent years. “Guys have been getting into wearing coloured checked shirts with skinny jeans over the past few years and now shirts have gone plainer and suddenly the trousers need to change. It’s flipped – the colour is at the bottom now,” said Gordon Richardson, design director at Topman.

Trendwatchers believe this loud-trousered look is unlikely to fade. The consensus among fashion insiders was that the look is too useful to peter out. “I wear red ones as part of my work uniform with heels and a blazer,” said Curren. Nathalie Hartley, senior fashion editor at Instyle, said bright jeans can be worn for both work and pleasure. “They can be rock’n'roll but they can look professional too. I saw a woman in her 40s wearing raspberry jeans, a twinset and stilettos in rush hour this morning. It was proof that bright jeans can look upstate.”

HAVEN’T washed your jeans in three months or more? Don’t worry, there’s no rush.

An experiment carried out “just for fun” by a Canadian university student and his professor has found that denim jeans stay surprisingly clean even after being worn for more than a year without washing.

“I expected to find some bacteria associated with the lower intestine, such as E. coli, but was surprised to find there weren’t any, just lots of normal skin bacteria,” said Rachel McQueen, a textile science professor at the University of Alberta.

“This shows that, in this case at least, the bacteria growth is no higher if the jeans aren’t washed regularly.”

The raw denim jeans were being worn as part of another experiment by one of Prof McQueen’s students, Josh Le

Mr Le had bought the jeans in 2009 and worn them at least five days of each week for 15 months and one week without washing them.

When it came time to give them a spin, Mr Le and Prof McQueen decided to test the jeans for bacteria growth as well.

The jeans were tested once before being washed and then again after being washed and worn for two weeks.

The results of the two tests were “virtually the same”, the university said.

Prof McQueen said the experiment indicated people could go longer between washing clothes with minimal risk, though she didn’t recommend delaying it for a year.

“Most bacterial organisms transferred into jeans come from the person wearing them, and providing there are no cuts or abrasions to the skin, the bacteria should not harm the wearer,” she said.

During Mr Le’s 15-month stint in the jeans, he aired them out three times per week to avoid odours. He has now given up wearing them every day.

“I’ve appointed them my weekend jeans,” he said

How many times have you turned on your television and seen a commercial for the Shake Weight, the Cami Secret, the Booty Pop, Bumpits, and the Neckline Slimmer? When I turn on the television I expect to be entertained by a good soap opera, a funny movie, or a cartoon. What are all these inventions for anyways? And now they have a brand new one: Pajama jeans.

On the commercial, Pajama jeans are described as “the styling of your favorite jeans with the comfort of pajamas. Pajama jeans are so comfortable you will want to sleep in them.” Yes, because we all like to look fashionable while we sleep. “Just because you are busy doesn’t mean you can’t look sharp.” That makes so much sense! Because there’s absolutely no way you can look sharp in anything else, right? “High contrast top stitching. Back pocket design details. EVEN brass rivets! They look like they were made by some European designer.” OMG! Brass rivets? High contrast stitching? Made to look like they were designed by some no-name European designer? Wow, these sound like…crap. Teenagers don’t think this stuff is hot. I think most of this stuff was made more for middle-aged housewives. When has a teenager ever watched a commercial for the Booty Pop and said, “I think I want a firm, lifted booty. I’m gonna buy the Booty Pop!” Umm…never? How about instead of buying the Shake Weight, you hit the gym and do some good, old-fashioned exercise? Or before you even consider buying that pack of Bumpits, you go to a hair care professional and let them solve the problem for you. Don’t give in to the media madness!Originally published February 2, 2011

Have a look at men’s wardrobes and most of them will essentially have one or more pairs of jeans. Mens jeans are not only the best-looking clothing items; they are comfortable and perfectly blend style with comfort.

There are many reasons that jeans have been around for many years. And, one can expect them to keep on playing key role among men’s clothing options. All you must know is how to choose a good pair of jeans as they are available in a huge variety.

It is their extended variety that will not allow mens jeans to go out of fashion ever in future. You may have to spend hours exploring different styles of jeans before actually finding the most suitable one. Many men are even not aware of various styles in which these jeans are actually available in the market.

Straight leg jeans as well as boot cut jeans for men are some of the classic fits that keep on ruling men’s interest even today. Loose fit and relaxed fit are other two popular mens jeans styles that are followed by a number of men. In terms of colors, one can find a number of shades in the classic blue jean styles. Dark blue and ink, for example, are two popular colors that go with modern jeans for men.

Have you ever heard the phrase “history repeats itself?”Well, this statement is very true in more ways than the governmental, economic sense in which this phrase is typically attributed. Unfortunately, fashion trends also repeat themselves.

Spring and summer 2011 will see the surprising, unfortunate comeback of 1970s bell-bottoms jeans, according to the Fashionising.com website. Why in the world is such an unfortunate trend making a comeback? Well, skinny jeans and tight pants galore have taken over the fashion world. It only makes sense that an opposite trend would come to the forefront of fashion, according to Fashionising.com.

For as long as I can remember, young women have been exposing themselves as much as school dress code policies will allow, thanks to hip-hop role models such as Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga. This has been frustrating for teachers, parents and the opposite sex for years and years. Now, the fashion industry wants to reverse this trend. Well, it’s about time, but there are better ways to address the tight-pants fashion trend than reinstating huge pants our parents wore when they were kids. I mean, what’s next—floral print pants?

Bell-bottoms are not flattering on anyone. Petite women will disappear in them. Average to plus-size women will look bigger than they already are due to inflatable pants. We live in South Dakota, and let’s face it, it’s extremely windy here. We will all be soaring around in our umbrella-shaped pants fueled by the wind blowing them up.

According to Fashionising.com, when extremely flared jeans were popular in 2007, it was OK to look “anything but good” while wearing them. However, the 2011 comeback will not apply this standard. Time will tell what 2007 bell-bottom sporters Katie Holmes, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow will do with this fashion comeback.

Well, if this bell-bottom comeback wasn’t bad enough when applied to women, this fashion trend is also geared towards men. Fortunately, the 2011 men’s bell-bottoms won’t be nearly as drastically huge as they were in the 70s. Rather, these pants look like the typical boot-cut jeans women wear today. Hopefully this male fashion trend won’t take off because the last person any girl would ever date is a man wearing women’s pants, especially when it conjures images of your dad doing the disco at his high school dance.

On the bright side, skinny jeans will be on the what-not-to-wear list. No more chunky thighs, muffin tops and just plain unappetizing pants anywhere in sight. On the downside, we will be blowing in the wind in our umbrella-shaped,over-sized bell-bottoms.

Mumbai: Activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) turned moral police as they protested against ‘vulgar’ posters of a popular jeans brand put up at a showroom in Juhu and got them removed. MNS activists visited the Diesel Jeans showroom opposite Maneckji Cooper School and demanded that the posters, which are part of the brand’s advertisement campaign, be removed.

According to MNS activists, the showroom management obliged immediately. They added that the protest had been organised as several people had complained to them. MNS office bearers also met Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth and requested him to take action against people putting up obscene hoardings.

”The Diesel Jeans campaign’s posters and hoardings are obscene and vulgar. We received several complaints about the posters from parents of children studying in the school opposite the showroom,” said Shalini Thackeray, president, MNS Cine Workers’ Union.

“The language used in the campaign, like ‘Smart gets the girl, stupid attends the orgy’ is vulgar. Some parents asked me what they should tell their children when they asked what that meant. We also met the joint commissioner. Seth told us they would definitely take action if we register a complaint,” she added.

According to Thackeray, one can ignore something vulgar on television by changing the channel or switching it off.

”But if there is hoarding or a poster before you, you cannot avoid it,” she contented. Thackeray said the MNS is also planning to protest against a television channel which has a vulgar tagline for one of its shows.

The showroom’s owners could not be reached for comment
